A little about the owners of Strathlaurie House;
Alexa and Michael Laurie "Alexa agus Michael O'Labhrada"
He was born at St Thomas, now amalgamated with Paradise, NL. Attended one-room school at St Thomas for primary grades and then completed grades 9, l0 and ll, at St Michael's Presentation Convent in Torbay, NL. Then, completed Grade XII (Nova Scotia curriculcum) taught at St Bonaventure's College at St John's, NL.
After high school, Michael enlisted in the RCAF in January, l953 and served with NATO in continental Europe. Upon repatriation, he served one year in the Newfoundland Constabulary and then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the highlight of which was driving dog teams in Aklavik, and Tuktoyaktuk, NWT.
Then, returned to complete a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Victoria in l970 and a Bachelor of Laws at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., in l973. Articled for 9 months with the Newfoundland Department of Justice and was in private practice appearing as Defence Counsel before all courts of this province cumulative to appearing before federal tribunals and in-house police tribunals as Counsel.
Michael's wife, Alexa, was born in London, England, and completed her early education at Blackheath High School, and then graduated in medicine at Guys Memorial Hospital and the University of London, London, England. Her parents, four uncles and both grandfathers were all practising physicians in London, England.
Alexa immigrated to this province in l977 as a family physician; she is currently Chief Medical Officer of Dr. Walter Templeman Hospital at Bell Island, NL
